Help Foundation celebrates Children’s Day, holds film festival
Pandit calls for exploring, preserving rich cultural heritage of state

Srinagar, Nov 14
In-depth understanding of heritage, culture and rich historical background of our state is a must to help our posterity to grow as mature, stable and responsible citizens.
This was stated by the Chairman, Public Service Commission Mr. Mohammad Shafi Pandit at a function held at Tagore Hall today to celebrate the Children’s Day. The function was a part of four-day Children Film Festival organized by Help Foundation Jammu and Kashmir in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, New Delhi.
A galaxy of intellectuals, government functionaries, members of various NGOs along with hundreds of children from various schools of Srinagar were present on the occasion.
While addressing the jam-packed auditorium Mr. Shafi stressed the need for inculcating the habit of respecting and making maximum use of our mother tongue, saying that only then world’s richest literature and the oldest recorded historical document Rajtarangini could be understood by the young generations.
He said that it is high time we change the traditional style of teaching and make studies more lively, interesting, and matching with the global standards. While congratulating the students on the occasion of Children’s Day, he said that it is our prime responsibility to understand and have complete know how of our roots and make it known to the world as those who loose their base remains hollow for the future.
Mr. Nissar Ahmad Ganai, Chairman Board of Schools Education in his address appreciated the initiatives taken by Help Foundation in the field of education under the able guidance of chairperson Mrs. Nighat Shafi and said that it is unfortunate that the education sector was worst hit during last two decades in the valley and young generations remained devoid of the basic facts regarding their rich historical background. The projects taken up by Help Foundation are giving new hopes in the field of education and government is also planning to set up a separate Heritage Cell to fulfill the cause.
General Secretary, Rajiv Gandhi Foundation in his address said that a bit of childhood remains alive at every stage of life. The quest of children for knowing and understanding the facts must always be fulfilled. The Help Foundation is making all out efforts of bringing out the hidden creativity of children and thus is helping them grow in a better way.
Earlier, an impressive power point presentation was shown to the audience in which the project “Discovering Srinagar” was highlighted. Under the project the children were taken to various historical sights of the city including Martand Temple made by the King Lalitaditya. The students under the project took up creative activities like Painting, Cutting, Writing, etc. The children also interacted with the people specially the older ones and explored the facts regarding the past. They also visited the place were the famous Kani Shawls are made since long times.
The student presented a rich cultural programme on the occasion. Prizes were also distributed among the meritorious students for excelling in various fields.
