Panchayat candidates seek enforcement of MCC | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Shafiq Mir RAJOURI, Mar 28: As the government of Jammu and Kashmir has announced to conduct Panchayat elections on non party basis, but the role of ministers of government is yet to be clarified whether they will be confined with in their office chambers or allowed to move in the field to lure and corrupt voters in favor of their proxy candidates. Aspiring candidates of Panchayats are concerned about the issue apprehending that the sitting minister may influence the process taking benefit of their official positions. Demanding complete ban on the movement and campaign of all ministers during the election process, aspiring candidates said that if the government is sincere, it should impose blanket ban on the movement of ministers in their respective districts. Zahoor Ahmed an aspiring candidate of Rajouri district demanded immediate ban on the movement of ministers after the notification is out. He said that if the government has announced to hold elections on non-party basis, it should impose a blanket ban on the movement of ministers. “This is just eyewash. Local ministers have started their campaign to corrupt the people in the name of employments and other benefits to get smooth sailing of their proxy candidates”, he said demanding immediate enforcement of code of conduct. Javed Ahmed of Mandi block in Poonch district also made similar demand saying that if the model code of conduct is not imposed strictly, there is no fun of saying that the elections are being held on non-party basis. He says that if the opposition parties do not act timely, government will mange elections in its favor. Observers opine that announcement of government to hold Panchayat elections on non-party base is just because it wants to give an impression that it has not lost support of the people.
