Centre for alliance candidate brighten as opposition fails on consensus | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu Mar 29: With PDP’s reluctance to support a joint opposition candidate for Jammu seat in upper house elections of which are slated to take place on April 13, the BJP has decided to field its own candidate. The decision to this effect was taken in BJP’s core group meeting here today. The meeting was presided by Party state chief Shamsher Singh Manhas and other members of core group who were present included Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta, Dr. Nirmal Singh, Ashok Khajuria, Jugal Kishore Sharma and Dr. Jitender Singh , sources close to party said. The core group officer threadbare discussions cleared the name of senior party leader Th. Ranjit Singh from Hiranagar. Though some senior leaders were adamant on fielding a prominent lawyer from Jammu who can be in a position to seek support from PDP but the idea was rejected by Party President and two Ex—Presidents, sources said. The sources said that BJP President had plainly made if clear in the meeting that instead of bringing an outsiders, they should field their own candidate. Mr. Singh who has also shown his keenness to contest. The elections has informed the partymen that victory or defeat hardly matters for him but he wants the recognition for over four decades service to the Party. It may be recalled that Party needs support of 29 MLAs to win the seat. But having only 11 members in the Assembly, it needs a support of 18 more members which is not possible without the support of PDP. Now fielding of candidates by BJP will not only be a symbolic contest for Party but it will also diminish chances for the victory of PDP candidates also and ensure the victory of alliance candidate hands down.
