| Need for federal police reviewed at meet on police reforms | | | New Delhi, July 29: The need for creation of federal police in the wake of stepped up terrorist activities in the country as also police reforms to meet the challenges posed by the menace were among a slew of suggestions reviewed at a meeting chaired by Home Minister Shivraj Patil here today.
The meeting of the sub-committee of the National Integration Council (NIC) on police reforms reviewed the suggestion for setting up of federal police for tackling inter-state, trans-border and organised crimes, especially those having international ramifications like drug trafficking, money laundering and terrorism, sources said.
It felt that police reforms were crucial for good governance, effectiveness of criminal justice system and for meeting challenges posed by terrorism, extremism, insurgency and organsied crime.
After the meeting, Patil told reporters that the meeting discussed measures to carry out police reforms at the national and state levels and felt that the existing laws should be amended to strengthen the police force and also to boost the intelligence collection machinery.
The Home Minister said the meeting discussed how the police force could get maximum cooperation from people and deliberated on better cooperation and coordination between the centre and states.
The meeting on police reforms came in the backdrop of major recommendations made by the National Police Commission, Ribeiro Committee, Padmanabhaiah Committee and Malimath Committee.
