Interlocutors have failed detained militants
3/31/2011 1:02:59 AM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 30: New Delhi’s nominated interlocutors have met people from all walks of life and taken their `valuable views’ into account. They have met politicians, journalists, academicians and women. The separatists chose to ignore them. However, the detained militants who command fair amount of respect from the masses have been ignored.
The chief interlocutor, Dileep Padgoanker was highly impressed by the `positive response’ shown by some detained militants in Srinagar’s Central Jail during his first visit to the Valley.Talking to media persons after the visit, Padgoanker had said: “The detained militants have a `peace plan’ which they want to discuss with the interlocutors.” The veteran journalist had even promised them an audience in future. The interlocutors visited the Valley several times since then but failed to keep their promise.
The interlocutors have almost finalized the report. They were about to submit it to the Home Ministry but some `influential lawyers’ from Srinagar and Jammu want to share with them their views. The interlocutors have delayed submission of their report to know the views of the lawyers.
The lawyers, who matter in the trouble torn Valley are behind the bars and their stand on Kashmir is no secret. Who, therefore, are the persons who made the interlocutors defer submission of their much awaited report? The detained militants, on the other hand have been actively involved in the conflict. And, if Padgoanker is believed, they have a peace plan as well. Why should not the interlocutors, therefore, meet them in the jail?
A valley based psychiatrist has warned against raising hopes of the detained persons. “It takes them to a make believe world and after coming out of prison to face harsh realities of life, they feel isolated. This wreaks havoc with their psychology”, he said.
Padgoanker, he said has done just that. “By promising them an interaction, he has made them feel `important’. And by not going to them again, he has disappointed them”, he said.
