Victory at Mohali: This is the Indian nation | | | Neha JAMMU, Mar 31: India scored a splendid victory at Mohali in the cricket World Cup semi-final and stormed into the final to be played At Wenkhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. It was not really a match between India and Pakistan. It was much more than that. It was the mother of all battles. The jubilant Indian media described the victory in its own way. It said "India vanquished Pakistan" in a high-voltage match watched by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani and millions and millions of passionate fans across the country. Indeed, it was a victory of sorts. People described it as a crowning triumph. Earlier, they had remained glued to their television sets right from morning till 11 P.M., when the inspiring but calm, composed and confident MS Dhoni's determined bowler Zaheer Khan took the last wicket of Misbah-ul-Haq (Pakistan) in the last over. The Dhoni's spectacular victory not only sent a capacity crowd at the PCA stadium into frenzy, but also gave an invaluable opportunity to the entire nation to celebrate the splendid victory. The fact is that celebrations broke out across the country at 11 P.M. and continued for quite sometime. People, including women, children and even elderly persons, converged on the roads and chanted slogans like "Bharat Mata Ki Jai", "Jet Gaya Bhai Jeet Gaya, Hindustan Jeet Gaya", "India has won" and "India has defeated Pakistan." Many of them had the national tri-colours in their hands. They were bursting crackers; they were dancing to the tunes of drumbeats; and they were exchanging greetings and hugging each other. Those who could manage sweets were distributing them as well. These were all poignant moments. The occasion turned out to be a blend of Diwali and Baisakhi in the country. It was indeed a wonderful scene to watch. What did the celebrations across the country indicate? The celebrations indicated the national resolve to take on all those working against India. The celebrations were a message for those in the political establishment who have been pursuing weak-kneed policies towards Pakistan and the secessionists in Kashmir that the nation wants the custodians of the Indian State to act in the manner a sovereign state behaves. In fact, the message from Mohali was: No compromise with the aggressor Pakistan; no concession to Pakistan, or for that matter to any other country, on any ground whatever; no concession to terrorism; and no concession to separatists. Yet another message was: Paramount national interests must be protected and further advanced. One can only hope and pray that those in New Delhi who are thinking in terms of re-staring composite dialogue process with Pakistan on the Pakistani terms or those who are thinking in terms of granting pre-1953 politico-constitutional status to Jammu and Kashmir would review their whole policy towards Islamabad and the Kashmiri leaders, the so-called mainstream or otherwise, and refashion the same taking into consideration the national sentiment, as the people across the country exhibited last night. The Indian nation will under no situation allow anyone in the establishment to pursue policies that further the geopolitical interests of the enemy in the region and compromise the Indian position in Jammu and Kashmir. —Early Times Report |
