From Mumbai mayhem to Mohali | | | The distance between Mumbai and Mohali(Punjab) is 1370 kms and it seems that Prime Minister,Manmohan Singh, and his counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani travelled this distance within a span of few hours on Wednesday evening. The two seem to have travelled separately but towards the end of the journey the two were seen together, arm in arm, declaring that all the issues that have been bedevilling the relations between the two sides will be sorted out through the process of dialogue. It seems that the sporting spirit on the Mohali cricket grounds, where the Indian and the Pakistani teams were locked in a nerve rattling world cup semifinal, had thrown its reflections on the room where Manmohan Singh and Gilani were closeted in a serious discussion.By the time the informal dialogue ended it became clear that the two sides had completed the meeting on a positive note which had encouraged Gilani to invite Singh to Pakistan. He also extended invitation to the Indian cricket team to visit Pakistan. This way the cricket diplomacy seems to have succeeded where it had failed during the time Gen.Zial ul Haq had visited Jaipur in 1987 to watch a cricket tie between India and Pakistan. The Mohali cricket tie has succeeded in bringing the two sides closer than it could do so in 2005 When Gen.Pervez Musharraf had visited New Delhi to watch the cricket tie between the Indian and the Pakistani teams While the Indian team's win at Mohali had buoyed up Manmohan to take speedy decision to reucing the trust deficit through sustained dialogue it had not disheartened Gilani who willingly reciprocated the suggestions from Singh. This time neither side imposed any precondition for the resumption of dialogue between the two sides. The way Singh said that the two sides agreed to discuss all issues and explore the possibility of reconciliation it seems that the stage was being set for the resumption of the composite dialogue between the t wo sides that had been suspended soon after the Mumbai terror strike in 2008.No doubt the two sides have held meetings,at various levels, during the last over six months, these meetings ended without any valid declaration. Those meetings had ended with each side laying pre-conditions for the resumption of the process of dialogue. To lend credence to the reports that the two sides achieved some breakthrough the foreign secretary of India,Nirupama Rao said, after the talks betweeen Singh and Gilani ended, that the dialogue at the foreign secretary,Home,Commerce and Defence seceretary level were to be held as part of the future course of action needed for narrowing down the chasm between the two sides. Those who believe that the establihment in Islamabad has,of late, been in favour of the process of reconciliation argue that it was under this changed mood that the activities of militants, operating in Jammu and Kashmir, and elsewhere in India have shown a marked downward curve. There has been also significant drop in the attempts of militants at crossing into and Kashmir from across the LOC.It is because of the change in Islamabad's mood that before, during and after the Mohali cricket tie between the cricket teams from India and Pakistan that no untoward incident took place on the LOC in Jammu and Kashmir or within the state. It is hoped that the Mohali spirit, rather the shadow of Mohali that threw a soothing impact on Gilani-Singh talks, motivate the two sides to move ahead without keeping their necks stiff. It is time that the two sides demonstrate flexibility and sincerity that could help he two nations to fight together against unemployment, poverty, malnuitrition.Let the two join hands in their fight for peace and progress. As compared to the progress achieved by nations that got freedom after India and Pakistan the two neighbouring countries have not been able to keep pace with other nations. The main reason being prolonged conflict and confrontation between the two sides forcing them to spend more on the defence than on other social services. It is time to join hands for securing a peaceful and stable south Asian region. |
