No shifting of slaughter houses outside city’s vicinity, a gross violation | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Apr 1: Even after more than a decade and thousands of complaints, the state government is yet to shift the two slaughter houses running illegally in residential colonies in the city of temples. Despite thousands of complaints from the residents in the city about these two municipal corporation run slaughter houses, that are running in gross violation of the fixed norms in the congested residential areas, the state government has failed to shift the slaughter houses from the residential areas. Two years back there was a plan to shift the slaughter house to Nagrota, but following the objections from the locals in Nagrota, the plan had to be shelved. Then the Municipality came up with another plan to shift the slaughter houses near the bank of the river Tawi, where a sewerage treatment plant was also planned to be made but no results yet. However when Commissioner in Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), SC sahni was asked the question about the shifting of the slaughter house, he was blank and giving some family reason, he said that the decision will be taken after some time. Notably while the one slaughter is running in Gujjar Nagar, with blood tricking down directly into the river Tawi, the other one is running near at Dogra Mohalla near a temple in the midst of the city. Even after State Pollution Control Board’s objection and thousands of complaints from the residents, the slaughter houses continue to be running in gross violation of the fixed norms. Besides these slaughter houses are also running in gross violation of the management of the biomedical waste, the reason State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) has been expressing concern on the issue. The residents in these areas have been stressing that government must ensure suitable treatment and disposal facilities for liquid and solid bio-waste generated from these slaughter houses. Not just the elderly residents in these areas, but even the young kids, youth and women, have been complaining that the slaughter of animals hurts the sentiments of the people, especially when they have to witness blood gushing out in the drains every morning. Samir Gupta, a youngster from Old City said that it is surprising that despite Jammu being called a city of temples, these slaughter houses have not been shifted yet, adding that these slaughter houses are also a great health risk, as the waste generated from these houses can spread infectious diseases and act as a breeding ground for flies and other small creatures.``We keep on listening time and again that authorities have planned to shift the slaughter house to some area, but that shifting never happens. Till date they have changed the plans many times. We are now skeptical about any government plans. We feel that the authorities are just doing to the lip service to silent the people’’, said Javed Ahmed from Gujjar Nagar area.Residents said that despite the official promises that the multi core slaughter houses will be constructed soon, it is not likely that they will see something on the ground anywhere near in future, given the past track on the issue.
