| J&K SAMAJ KALYAN KENDRA | | | Jammu, Nov 15 J&K Samaj Kalyan Kendra, has welcomed J&K HighCourt's action seeking status report from the government on the facilities being provided to physically handicapped children of the state in the age group of 6-14. A meeting of the NGO held here today, under the chairmanship of Sh.Inderjeet Khajuria, President of Samaj Kalyan Kendra brought on record that out of 36,000 physically challenged children in the age group of 6-14, 4000 are hearing and speech handicapped. Samaj Kalyan Kendra, founded in the year 1980, has been striving to mitigate the miseries of some of these hearing and speech handicapped children by providingfree education to them upto 10th class in the school run by the Kendra. The school for deaf and dumb being run by the Kendra for last over two decades is imparting formal education to them upto class 10 and is dually recognized by the J&K Board of School Education and the State government. A highly dedicated, qualified and trained team of 6 teachers including the principal is rendering their services against very meager salaries, which the Kendra can afford from the resources generated through public donation and a limited grant in aid received from the government through social welfare department. The grant in aid to the school is given on ad-hoc basis, which varies from 10 to 40% of the total expenditure incurred by the Kendra on running the school. Major portion of this cost comprises salary to the school staff, which is only nominal. The Kendra has appealed to the social welfare department to provide 90% of the salary amount of teachers as aid to the school, so that more trained teachers could be engaged and more number of handicapped students could be enrolled. Further the salaries of the teachers also needs to be upgraded to a reasonable level. It has asked the government that, in keeping with the spirit of the Honourable High Court's action, government should pay due attention to ameliorate the lot of this section of handicapped children.
