| Tension in Cachar sector of Indo-Bangla border | | | Guwahati, July 29 : Tension was running high in Katigorah region in Cachar district following reinforcement of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR)presence on the India-Bangladesh border.
A Silchar report said that Bangladesh has set its eyes on a 200 acres of Indian land across the Surma river in Ktigorah area after grabbing 310.77 acres of land in Karimganj and 189.06 acres in Dhubri district of Asom.
Tension started building up after a large number of Bangladesh farmers, under BDR cover, started tilling the land last month across the Surma river. The BSF protested and when the farmers paid no heed, they opened fire to disperse the intruders. This was followed by a series of flag meetings between the two security forces.
This week, the Bangla farmers returned again to encroach upon Indian territory with BDR support. The BSF, on its part, has tightened its security and intensified its patrolling in the area using armoured vehicles.
BSF Commandant at Dhalcheri camp, Biplab Sengupta said, "we are ready to meet any challenge and would foil any designs of Bangladesh." He also appealed to the people to remain calm.
"The situation is normal and there is no cause for any panic," he said. The BSF also staged a flag march yesterday.
Officials denied a report that the people living in the border area had been asked to evacuate following the build up by the BDR.
Asom Revenue Minister Bhumidhar Barman had announced in the recently concluded state assembly session that 499.83 acres in Asom had been encroached by Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, A central team headed by Mr BS Lalli, Secretary (border management), in the Home Ministry, is likely to arrive here later in the day to visit the border areas in Dhubri and Karimganj.
The team will also review the implementation of the Asom Accord, sources said.
