Regional centre website in Dogri to be launched soon | IGNOU holds 22nd convocation | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 2: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) today held 22nd convocation at Regional Centre Jammu via tele-conferencing. Convocation at Jammu was held at the Auditorium of Government College for Women (GCW) Gandhi Nagar. Minister for Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik was guest of Honour on this occasion at Regional Centre Jammu and awarded Degrees and Diplomas to the eligible learners. 1167 learners from Regional Centre Jammu were successfully declared eligible to receive certificates, diplomas and degrees, out of which 326 learners were awarded Degrees and Diplomas in the Convocation function at Jammu. Two learners namely Sheetu Raina of MA (Public Administration) programme and Satnam Singh of MA (Sociology) programme brought laurels to the city of temples by getting Gold Medals in their respective programmes. It is pertinent to mention here that these two learners topped in their respective programmes. Satnam Singh was chosen for Prof. Ram Reddy Memorial Gold Medal 2011. Five IGNOU friends including R K Koul, Chief General Manager (CGM) BSNL Dr. Aneeta Soodan, Principal SP College of Commerce, Dr. Raj Kumar, Deputy Registrar (Services), University of Jammu, Sunil Singh Bandral, Chief Manager, Advertising and Marketing, Take One Channel, Imtiyaz Ahmed, Assistant Director, Hospitality and Protocol and four distinguished students were felicitated on the occasion. Guest of Honour at Regional centre Jammu on the occasion, Abdul Gani Malik, termed the concept of Open and Distance Education as a revolutionary one. Malik lauded the initiative of IGNOU to reach to the rural and tribal areas, low literacy areas, physically challenged, jail inmates and Govt. and non-government sectors, where education through conventional system was not possible. He assured IGNOU Authorities of all possible help as far as spreading Education to every corner of the region is concerned. Regional Director K.K.Bhat, presented the regional centre report. In his report he presented a description about various activities which have resulted in the emergence of Indira Gandhi National Open University as the largest Open University in the world–a fact confirmed by a Wikipedia listing of 61 top Universities in the world by student enrolment. Regional Director listed various initiatives taken by Regional Centre Jammu to improve support services to learners of the region. He also mentioned that IGNOU will keep on launching value based regional programmes in Jammu which will cater to the needs of local people particularly residing in remote areas of the Region. Bhat also informed that the IGNOU Regional Centre Jammu Website in local Dogri language will be launched very soon. K K Bhat gave a brief description about the expansion of IGNOU network to remotest parts of the Region like Chhatroo, Mahore, Nagri, Muralian, Marh, etc in terms of establishment of various Learner Centres in the Year 2009-2010 under various Schemes like CNRI, EEBB (Sachar Committee Report), Remote Area, etc for the benefit of local populace of the region. Assistant Registrar, Pappu Singh Sapriban presented the vote of thanks.
