Workshop on Women Empowerment Concludes | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Apr 2: Women’s Study Centre of Govt. Degree College, Kathua organised two days workshop with the collaboration of Mahila Mandal Badala at village Badala. The first day of workshop was devoted to the legal awareness of rural women by the legal luminaries and second day was devoted to the health and hygiene awareness of the same target group by the qualified doctors. The first day of the workshop began with the welcome address and introduction of the topic by Dr. Sujata Slathia Coordinator of the Women’s Study Centre. In her address she also expressed concern about the falling sex ratio and advised the women not to go for female foeticide. Nidhi Suman and Madhvi Singh both advocates were the resource persons, who spoke at length on the laws related to domestic violence, divorce, maintenance, old age protection and other family laws. Women participants numbering around 150 asked many queries from the resource persons who in turn satisfied them in local language. Prof. Gopal Sharma in his address highlighted the importance of education and gender equality. At the end of the first day of the workshop, Dr. Ram Krishan, Principal of the College in his presidential address exhorted upon the women folk to seek legal remedies for the sufferings instead of tolerating the sufferings. He also appreciated role of the women’s Study Centre of Govt. Degree College Kathua in organising activities meant for the emancipation of rural women. Second day of the workshop started with welcome address of the guests and participants by Updesh Andotra, General Secretary of the Mahila Mandal Badala. Dr. Dimple Bhagat spoke on health and hygiene matters and gynaecology problems. Free Medical check up of women was also held by Dr. Dimple. She also distributed some medicines free of cost. Dr. N.K. Gupta, Dr. T.R. Sharma and Dr. Anita Kiran faculty members of Govt. Degree College Kathua also spoke on this occasion. Dr. Sangeet Head of the Hindi Department advised the women not to be the mute spectators to the injustices being done to them. The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Sujata Slathia. A large number of women, former councillors, penches, serpenches, prominent village leaders and NGOs participated in the said workshop. Stage anchoring was done on both the days by Updesh Andotra.
