World cup boosts Kashmir cricket bat export and sale | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar/Jammu, Apr 2: :-Even after the cricket world cup has ended on Saturday the demand for cricket bats has skyrocketed during the last over one month. Field sources said that scores of units, manufacturing cricket bats, in Ananatnag district in south Kashmir have received heavy orders for exporting bats to different states. Official sources said that since the Kashmir willow is considered the best in the world the bats manufactured from this willow are in great demand. Unit holders said that whenever there are international or national cricket ties "the demand for cricket bats from our units goes up." According to-the unit holders the demand had gone up even during the IPL matches and the just ended world cup has given a boost to "our trade."One unit holder said that when the demand for the cricket bat in units in Meerut in UP has gone up, from 400 bats per day to 1200 bats a day, "we expect bigger demand for our produce." He said since the IPL matches are to begin shortly "we have been working overtime to manufacture as many bats as possible." About 10,000 people are directly and indirectly connected with the bat manufacturing activity in Kashmir. In view of the rising demand for cricket bats from Kashmir the state Government has enacted a law providing for a deterrent punishment for anyone found smuggling willow clifts from the valley to the outside market. Official sources said that this law had to be enacted after timber smugglers had earned fortune by smuggling willow clifts out of the valley. Those engaged in bat manufacturing earn about Rs.10,000 a month.Unit holders say that the production could further increase if the Government installed latest machines required for processing and seasoning of the bats.(KIP)
