Curtail defence budget, spend money on education: Tarigami to Indo-Pak | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, April 3: Urging India and Pakistan to curtail defence budget, the CPI (M) State Secretary and MLA Khansahib, M Y Tarigami, Sunday said that money saved from defence can be utilized in education sector. Addressing a two-day conference organized by J&K United School Teachers Association here, Tarigami said, “In the last six-decades both India and Pakistan have spend billions on nuclear weapons and other defence equipment. But education has been neglected. If defence budget is curtailed, the money could be utilized in education sector.” He also blamed education has been commercialized and businessmen want to earn more and more money out of it. “Education has been made a commodity by the businessmen. They want to earn more and more out of it. Even teachers in government schools send their kids to private schools. This trend has to be discouraged,” the CPI (M) leader said. He said that teachers across the world are considered as the farmers of mass opinion and vanguard of change. “In the present scenario, the teaching community can play a vital role in strengthening the secular fabric of the state and give a befitting reply to the forces who are out to disintegrate the state on regional and communal lines,” he added.
