| Court summons editor, bureau chief of local daily | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Apr 3: In pursuance of a civil suit filed by the Health Minister in J&K coalition government Sham Lal Sharma, Principal District Judge Jammu Ashok Kumar Shan has issued summons against the editor of a local daily newspaper and its Bureau Chief and the Printers. They have been asked to appear in the court on April 28. The Health Minister who also holds the charge of horticulture and floriculture departments, had earlier filed a defamation suit against the defendants. The minister has claimed damages of Rs10 crores claiming he has been aggrieved by alleged misleading, malicious and defamatory story against him by the defendants in the newspaper on February 10 this year. In the two cases Health Minister has contended that it was a malicious story in which serious and false allegations of land encroachment were leveled against him and his elder brother, Madan Lal Sharma, MP from Jammu Lok Sabha constituency. The Health Minister has further contended that through this story an impression has been given that the two senior Congress leaders were involved in illegal activities, particularly of land grabbing at a large scale. Claiming this to be a false news item published with the motive of defaming the senior Congress leaders and their families, Sharma served legal notices to the defendants calling upon them to publish clarification regarding the news item in the newspaper. The Minister has further observed that since the defendants failed to take 'corrective steps' , he has been forced to move the court of the Principal District Judge Jammu. After hearing Advocate Vikram Sharma for the petitioners, the Principal District Judge has issued the summons to the defendants. |
