News Analysis

Early Times Report

Jammu, April 3: The chairman of the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference today denied his group had approached the Interlocutors. “Officially we have not sent any representation to them”, he said. One of the interlocutors, MM Ansari had yesterday claimed that a group had submitted a representation to them on behalf of Mirwaiz at Rajouri during their visit to the border district last month.

The Mirwaiz’s sentence needs thorough analysis. The group has not sent any proposal officially is it safe to presume that the group met them un-officially?

The disclosure triggered a debate across Kashmir. While some quarters severely criticized the Mirwaiz Hurriyat for what they called a `misadventure’, others held a different view. “There is no harm in meeting the interlocutors. The leaders must meet them if they want to. But the meetings should not be held secretly. After meeting, the leaders must take the people into confidence.”

Political activists owing allegiance to the Mirwaiz Hurriyat lashed out at MMA Ansari for `maligning the image’ of the separatist amalgam. “Ansari is lying. Why should the amalgam meet him at Poonch or Rajouri when a meeting can be conveniently and secretly held at New Delhi or elsewhere”, said an activist.

He added that the leaders need not meet the interlocutors. “The Home Minister’s invitation for secret talks is still valid”, he said adding “New Delhi is willing to have a dialogue with the moderate Hurriyat.”

Another activist said the reluctance of the Hurriyat leaders to talk with the Interlocutors have made them to eat a humble pie. “In a bid to feel important, they (interlocutors) are issuing such silly statements”, he said.

This argument cannot be rejected on the face of it. Not to speak of Interlocutors, `hardliner’ Geelani is not ready to talk New Delhi unless Jammu Kashmir is declared a disputed territory. The Mirwaiz Hurriyat, therefore, continues to be New Delhi’s only hope in Kashmir. How can the Interlocutors annoy the moderate Hurriyat unless they are pursuing a different agenda at somebody’s behest?
