Militant groups in J&K warn public against taking part in civic polls | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, April 3: Militants have warned people against participation in the forthcoming municipal elections. Posters appearing outside mosques and prominent places across Kashmir urging the people to stay away from the polls have alerted the security agencies.
According to police sources, this seems a reaction to massive participation of people in 2008 elections. The security forces, sources said have been put on alert in response to the posters.
The posters appeared one week after the killing of a National Conference worker in Tral, Pulwama district.
Officials believe only 300 militants were now active in Kashmir. “But they are enough to create trouble”, said an intelligence officer.
As part of the strategy, area domination in rural areas is being carried out by intensifying the night patrol and increasing the vigil around security installations and vulnerable persons like political activists.
Panchayat elections are being held in the state after a gap of around 10 years with the last polls held in 2001. |
