| Congress tames Monga, Vakil and their factions | | It was `Kamraaj Plan’ at work | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, April 4 : When the former Prime Minister, Bakshi Ghulam Muhammad become `intolerable’ for New Delhi, a plan was devised to dethrone him without annoying his followers. The Congress Chief Ministers were asked to submit their resignation on the assurance that such resignations shall not be accepted. All Chief Ministers obeyed. Bakshi Ghulam Muhammad also submitted his resignation. New Delhi accepted his resignation and thus dethroned him without disturbing the calm waters of Jehlum.
The Congress party has repeated the exercise today and have managed to restore peace (though temporary) between the warring factions of the organization. Vakil and Monga are out of the fray and Congress high command knows no brows shall be raised.
Vakil and Monga belong to different factions of the Congress. Both were authorized to file their nomination papers for vacant seats in the Legislative Council. However, they were told in clear terms that they will have to withdraw incase the party so decided.
Both were made to sign the withdrawal forms in advance. Meanwhile, as per the plan the Congress High Command withdrew their candidature.
The decision has served a dual purpose. It has tamed not only Vakil and Monga but their respective factions as well. Secondly, it has helped the Congress to strengthen the alliance with National Conference.
The National Conference was interested in contesting both the seats from Kashmir. But the state unit of the Congress was in favour of contesting one seat in Kashmir in order to register its presence in the valley.
