Navratri commences with prayers and fasting | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, April 4 : Faith can move mountain and it became evident today when sea of devotees thronged to Holy Shrines and Temples associated with Goddess Durga (the ultimate Shakti) to seek her blessings apart from giving serenity of the soul, but also to realize goals in individual lives on the first navratra This realization becomes more stronger when one watches the 'Bawe wali mata’ shrine, witnessing long queues, notwithstanding, devotees who are determined to have the glimpse of the Mata’s idol on the first Navratra. Large number of devotees thronged the different temples in Jammu to offer special prayers and pay their obeisance to Godess Durga on the occasion of first navratri, today. All the city temples were tastefully decorated befitting the occasion but the main attractor was the historic Kali Temple (Bahu Fort) recorded large number of pilgrims queued up to have darshan of popularly known deity the 'Bawe wali mata'. Since immemorial times the Bahu Fort temple has a great importance among the people of Jammu city and still attracts large number of devotees from remote and bordering area also visit to pay obeisance not during only navratras but during the calendar year. "I went to the Bawe wali mata temple with my family to get blessings from Mata rani and offered peres, coconuts and a chunni," said 46-year-old Kishan Sharma Neha Khurana, 28, planted grains of barley in a pot as part of the festival rituals and her family would worship the pot throughout the nine days. This custom is indicative of fertility and is known as 'Khetri'. "The pot is kept in the prayer room of the house. Water is sprinkled every day and the house must have at least one occupant at all-time till the khetri is fully grown to about 3-5 inches in length. It is immersed in Yamuna after the festival concludes," Khurana explained.In these nine days, many men do not shave or cut scalp hair. The administration on the other hand has managed them to maintain proper decorum and other required facilities to avoid any sort of miss happening due to heavy crowd by taking the help of Civil defence too for the purpose of security. Traffic police is also deployed at the Bahu fort for the proper and smooth functioning of traffic. Along with them the private parking facility is also available. Due to this the market of the Bahu fort has make better as the number of pilgrims increased who are customers for the shopkeepers. When contacted acting SHO, Sewa Ram said that all the required facilities have been completed. Civil defence are also co-operating with the security force for the smooth functioning. He also said that the rush is increasing day by day and they are ready for it. The state of Jammu and Kashmir is bestowed with a number of temples devoted to Maa Durga where Navratri is celebrated with utmost devotion and purity. In Kathua district there are different temples with different legends attached to each one of them. The most famous ones are Mata Balaji Sundri Temple which is an ancient shrine situated atop the Shivalik Hills in Parole. It dates back over 2000 years nestled in the middle of a mango grove. Sukrala Devi shrine is at a distance of 9.60 Kms from Billawar and about 75 Kms from Kathua. The holy shirne is the abode of goddess Mal Devi, the re-incarnation of Sharda Devi.
