Finally NC gives up its autonomy demand! | Sageer Report, Rather Penal and Interlocutors | | Early Times Report Jammu, April 4: For the past three months nobody from the National Conference has made any mention of autonomy. The former Chief Minister and National Conference Patron, Dr Farooq Abdullah being the only exception. He made a mention of it while speaking at the India Today Conclave held last month in New Delhi. Has NC given up the demand? Two years ago Justice Sageer submitted his report. He had made a passing reference of autonomy but NC made it a big issue. `We feel vindicated’, a statement issued by the NC said. However, nothing happened. On October 13 last year, the state government referred Justice Sageer’s recommendations to a panel headed by the Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather for consideration. The Rather Panel was supposed to submit its report within three months. The Panel, however, completed three months on January 13. It is April 4 and no report has been submitted by the Panel. Surprisingly the Panel was formed when New Delhi had already nominated its interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir. While the Panel has been almost forgotten, the interlocutors have already submitted their preliminary report. The final report is expected shortly after the Interlocutors meet some influential lawyers from Srinagar and Jammu. The preliminary report has hit hard on Omar autonomy demand, Justice Sageer’s recommendations and the Rather Panel. Notwithstanding this, Omar holds the interlocutors in high esteem and has been urging the separatists to meet them. Justice Sageer headed one of the working groups formed by the Prime Minister in 2006. The group submitted its report early this year and National Conference considered it a victory. However, the National Conference could not celebrate the `victory’ as the first phase of the on-going agitation commenced soon after. The report of the interlocutors, therefore, has rendered both Justice Sageer’s recommendations and the Rather Panel infructious. Shockingly when the Omar led government was supposed to register protest with New Delhi for causing miscarriage to Sageer’s recommendations and the Rather Panel, he is urging the separatists to meet the interlocutors. Has Omar given up the autonomy demand as well?
