JMC intensifies drive against adulteration

JAMMU, April 5: S.C. Sawhney Commissioner Jammu Municipal Corporation alongwith health officer and team of food inspectors conducted a drive to check the quality of food items being sold in the city especially during the Navratra Festival.

Atleast 150 food establishments were inspected like sweet shops, dhabas, restaurants, fruit shops, ice-cream parlours, tea stalls, sugar cane juice rehries etc. During the inspection 21 defaulters were booked under the provisions of Prevention of Food Adulteration Act 1954 and J&K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000. An amount of Rs. 9200.00 (Rupees nine thousand and two hundred) was charged as fine from the defaulters and about 70 kg of sweetmeats like burfi & jalebi, 30 kgs of unwholesome cooked food and 10 Kgs of cut fruit which were being sold in unhygienic conditions were destroyed on spot.

The team also destroyed 30 pieces of Chipped Crockery and 200 pouches of Gutkha which were being sold in the polythene packets during the drive in these areas.

All the food establishments’ owners are strictly warned to adhere to the terms and conditions of PFA licenses and keep their premises neat and clean for ensuring supply of pure & good quality of food items to the consumers and are also instructed not to use polythene carry bags.

Besides this, the Municipal Veterinary Officer alongwith field staff conducted drive against the adulteration of milk and visited the areas of Asia Chowk, Gandhi Nagar, Nai Basti, Satwari, Trikuta Nagar, Gangyal etc. During the drive 128 milk cans were checked out of which 04 milk cans which were of sub-standard quality / n were destroyed on spot.

Further continuing the drive to check the menace of stray animals, the team had also visited the areas of Amphalla, Bakshi Nagar, Rehari, CPO Chowk, Panjthirthi, Circular Road, Jewel, Bohri, Janipur, Paloura, Muthi, Bahu Fort, Railway Road, Channi, Gandhi Nagar etc and lifted 10 stray animals from these areas.
