Make other sports rich man's game like cricket
4/5/2011 10:52:41 PM

Rich man's game brings riches to the players. This is what has happened to the members of the Indian team who won the World Cup in Mumbai the other day. Each player has become a crorepati within a couple of days after state Governments announced hefty cash reward. Some got Rs.one crore others Rs.two to Rs.three crores. Each player of the winning team will get complimentary railway tickets entitling them to travel unlimited times in AC coaches. Many among them will be given plots for construction of residential houses. Not only this. The state Government of Jharkhand, where M.S.Dhoni belongs to, has announced to donate a sprawling piece of land where Dhoni could fulfill his dream of building a stadium. The Uttrakhand Government has announced allotment of one plot for construction of residential houses for Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar at Musoori on the plea that they have been frequent visitors to the hill station. The Government has also announced to name the new stadium aftr Dhoni. In fact the state Governments have announced awards and rewards to those players who belonged to their states. For instance Gujarat Government has decided to reward two players who belong to the Gujarat state and so on.Haryana,Delhi,Punjab,UP,Maharashtra and Karnataka states too have decided to reward those who belonged to these states. But the state of Jammu and Kashmir, whose former Chief Minister,Dr Farooq Abdullah, has remained associated with the sports organisations, has displayed miserliness while rewarding Suresh Raina who too was member of the winning team. Belatedly Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, has announced to allot one residential plot to Raina in Srinagar.
Suresh Raina belongs to Kashmir and his father was in Government service till 1990.The Raina family is said to have first gone to Himachal and later to Gaziabad in Uttar Pradsh where they are settled. When the reward announcing process was started Raina was neither owned by the UP Government nor by the Government in Jammu and Kashmir. However,a word was sent to UP Chief Minister,Mayawati who has decided to reward Suresh Raina.Again the rich man's game has enabled number of members of the winning Indian cricket team to be booked by various multinational companies for advertising their goods. Before the end of the worl Cup2011 M.S.Dhoni,Sachin Tendulkar were on the top of the list of brand ambassadors. There were others like Yuv Raj Singh and Harbhajan Singh who would figure in some advertisements. Now Yuv R aj Singh has been bracketted with Dhoni and Tendulkar as far as the brand ambassadorship is concerned.Latest reports said that Yuvi has been booked for Rs.five crores per deal by a few multinational companies. As a successful captain of the Indian team in several ODIs Dhoni has surpassed bollywaood actors and even Tendulkar as far as booking for brand ambassadorship is concerned. Now this side business is expected to make Indian cricketeers richer than film stars. This is the beauty of rich man's game.
It is but natural that the quantum of rewards, awards and fee for per outing grip the world by cricket fever. But all this is missing when one talks of poor man's games ,including football, hockey, basketball, wrestling, boxing and above all tip-cat.Those times have gone when boys would usually play football andd tip-cat in the villages.some five decades ago one would see boys playing tip-cat in the streets. And with cricket fever gripping India like pleague tip-cat,football have been replaced by cricket in the rural areas too.Whether kids have proper bats, kit, wickets or not they may even indulge in mock cricket playing.A rough bat hitting a rubber ball with no signs of wickets or pitch. They think that if they keep on practising like that one day they too may be members of the cric ket teams and that could be the signal for becoming rich.If one does not believe in the wealth that cricket players earn, through fair means, one need to compare the life style of living and former cricketeers with those who play and used to play football, hockey, basket ball or who are wrestlers and boxers. No father will ask his daughter what is the profession of her cricketer lover. It would be sufficient for a father to feel satisfied if he is told that his daughter wants to marry a cricketeer. The story used tobe different over two decades ago. When a girl announced that she wanted to marry Kaipl Dev her father wanted to know from his daughter about the profession of Dev.The girl is the same who later married Kapil with the consent of her parents. The sports ministry in the centre and those in the states need to prop up footbal and hockey and other games on the pattern of cricket so that India was not forced to perform miserably in those games.
