6th April - the “Foundation Day” of BJP | | BALBIR RAM | 4/5/2011 10:53:28 PM |
| Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the second largest political party in India, came into existence on April 6,1980, with Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee as its first National President. It registered its first political victory in 1984 Lok Sabha elections by wining just 2 seats. However, in the following 1989 Lok Sabha elections, this party won 88 seats of Parliament. In 1996, BJP became the single-largest political party in the Parliament, with the Congress at its lowest tally ever. BJP created history by assuming power at the centre when Atal Behari Vajpayee became Prime Minister but had to step down after serving the shortest time of thirteen days. In the Lok Sabha elections held in 1998, the BJP-led NDA ( National Democratic Alliance) obtained a simple majority and Vajpayee returned as Prime Minister. This coalition government fell in May 1999 when the leader of AIADMK, Jayalalitha, withdrew her support, and fresh elections were again called. In October 1999, the BJP-led NDA won majority seats. The BJP won an all-time high of 183. Again, Atal Behari Vajpayee became Prime Minister for the third time and L.K. Advani as Deputy Prime Minister & Union Home Minister. This government successfully completed its full term. A history was created by NDA under the able leadership of Atalji when it joined 23 political parties and governed the country. The BJP and the NDA could not win majority in the general elections in 2004. Since 2004, it is the Congress with its allies which has been ruling the country. The people who preferred the Congress over BJP-led NDA in the 2004 elections are now realizing their mistake. Today, a common Indian citizen, when compares the rule of NDA with that of Congress-led UPA, realizes his blunder by not giving NDA another chance. During these years of Congress rule under the so-called world’s great economist Dr. Manmohan Singh, there has been manifold hike in the prices of essential items, corruption is scaling new Himalayan heights, scam after scam is getting unearthed with involvement of Congress leaders. Neighbouring countries like China and Pakistan are posing threat to the unity and integrity of the country. On the other hand, during NDA rule, the nation successfully carried out Pokhran Nuclear Tests ,we faced Kargil War, there were Tsunamis, earthquakes and droughts in many parts of the country. Despite serious odds, there was no price rise. The neighbouring countries did not dare to roar. NDA under Vajpayee launched the Golden Quadrilateral project, a project to link the four corners of the nation with 4-lane, highways, including expressways such as Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. Now in recent past Congress led UPA government has become the most corrupt administration in India with lot of scams in its piggy and people are now awaiting change of guard and the only option is BJP. In recent past Congress has never been able to justify its allegations leveled against the so called ‘Hindu terror’ and it stands exposed in its policy which has always been anti-BJP. The Congress which misses no opportunity to paint BJP as communal party, should remember that it was BJP which fielded a Muslim A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as its candidate for the post of President of India and ensured his victory. In reality, it is the Congress which works on communal lines and the same is clear from the fact that it has been delaying the hanging of Afzal Guru, a convict of Parliament attack. The Congress has been making hue and cry over granting reservation to the women but every time when the Bill is tabled in Parliament its attitude and conduct become such irresolute that the Bill gets lost in the Parliamentary din. The BJP not only desires reservation for women in all the elected bodies of the country but has taken a lead in this direction by granting 33 pr cent reservation in its organization and various organs. Though the BJP is not as old as as Congress and inspite of having a very recent birth, it has managed because of its clear thinking, principled philosophy and selfless and devoted leadership to dominate and become a decisively major political player on the national scene. The day is not far when India will be having only BJP as a political party with credibility at national level and place in the hearts of a common citizen.
