Leech therapy may cause HIV | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 5: Leech therapy is widely practiced in Kashmir especially in the rural areas. People believe that it cures many a disease ranging from wrinkles to Arthritis. An expert in Unani Medicine also sees the age-old method as a better alternative to Allopathic drugs. But he has a word of caution for those who intend to undergo the therapy. It may cause HIV. According to Director Central Unani Medicine, Dr Muhammad Khalid Sidiq, warns against repeated use of a single leech on more than one patient. "It may cause HIV", he said. "If different leeches are used on different patients then it is safe. In fact the patients must ensure that a fresh leech has been used on them", he added. But usually the therapists have limited number of leeches. Using a fresh leech for every patient is not simply possible. After treating a patient, the therapist presses the abdomen of the leech gently making the insect vomit all the blood. But the risk of HIV infection is always there. Leech therapy started in Egypt some 2500 years ago. Then it was used to pump out toxins from the body. Presently a European specie Hirudo Medicinalis is used as it consumes between 5 and 15 ml of blood - 4-6 times their body weight in a single feeding. Generally leech therapists use up to 10 leeches so the patient can lose up to 150 ml of blood during the treatment The bite of a leech gives pain equitant to three mosquito bites. The leech saliva is filled with a chemical that contains a painkiller, which stops the patient from feeling the bite. The saliva also has a chemical, which keeps the blood from clotting. Leech is the ideal therapist for blood circulation disturbances. Usually unsatisfactory blood circulation is connected with diseases such as: Thrombose, cramp veins, Haemorrhoiden, cardiac infarct, impact accumulations, calcifying the containers, Tinnitus. Positive effects could be determined with rheumatism, Arthrose, volume disk problems, pulling, bruises, muscular pains or muscle injuries. |
