BJP, VHP, several religious organisations threaten agitation
'Decision interference in Hindu religious affairs'

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 5: With Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) preferring not to alter announced Amarnath Yatra schedule, Hindu social and religious organisations have begun 'flexing muscles' to take on board and government for what they are terming as 'interference in their religious affairs.'
On April 3, 2011; extremely powerful Baba Amarnath Budha Amarnath Yatra Niyas (BABAYN) had convened a meeting at Geeta Bhawan and unanimously decided to oppose the decision of board to curtail Amarnath Yatra duration from two months to 45 days. Niyas has decided to launch awareness and signature campaign simultaneously from April 12 all over Jammu region.
Following on the footsteps of the Niyas, Hindu religious organisation Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) today upped the ante threatening to launch country-wide agitation over Governor N.N. Vohra led SASB's decision to curtail Amarnath yatra by a period of 15 days and asked him to reconsider his decision. VHP's state President Dr Ramakant Dubey addressed a hurriedly called press conference.
He warned SASB to immediately withdraw the order. "Mr. Vohra has succumbed to the pressure of the separatists and elements inimical to the peace. It is this pressure which forced him to curtail duration of annual Baba Amarnath Yatra the yatra by 15 days. He has no right to play with the sentiments of crores of Hindus all over the world by violating religiously accepted calendar of the yatra," added Dubey.
He threatened to launch agitation against the decision of SASB across the country. Lashing out at separatists for opposing the yatra, the VHP state President said that no Kashmiriyat existed in Kashmir and it was just a tool of propaganda. "Kashmiriyat believes in peace and religious co-existence and brotherhood, but anti-peace elements and separatists have forgotten it and have been opposing the yatra", he said.
Lending support to his voice, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also warned the state administration and Shri Amarnath Shrine Board against provoking sentiments of people by fiddling with matters of faith. State Chief Spokesperson and National Executive Member Dr. Jitendra Singh criticized the decision bluntly and said that government has refused to learn from the experience of previous years when Amarnath land row had rocked the entire country because of government's wrong decisions.
Singh preferred to describe Shri Amarnath Shrine Board's decision to curtail period of Amarnath yatra by 15 days as yet another ploy to appease Kashmir separatists and semi-separatists. Dr. Singh questioned the argument that the date of yatra commencement had been postponed to June 29 from June 13 because of unsuitable weather conditions and countered that even during the routine yatra periods, there are occasions when weather interferes with the Yatra and the yatra is in such cases temporarily suspended.
He stressed that from the point of religious faith or "Aastha" also, Dr. Singh explained that as per time-honoured tradition, yatra must start on the day of "Jyeshth Purnima" which falls on June 13 and therefore the sanctity of the Yatra is liable to be eroded if the holy dates are tampered. Similarly, members of Shri Ram Sena also expressed serious resentment against decision to curtail duration of the Holy Amarnath Yatra this year.
Rajiv Mahajan, State President of Shri Ram Sena strongly condemned the decision of the Board and appealed for its immediate revocation.
