Congress convenes Legislative Party meeting on April 11
Leaving no chance to have ‘repeat’ of past experience……?
4/5/2011 11:23:39 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu: As the date for Legislative Council polls draws closer, almost all the political parties which have stakes in the seats have begun exercise of drawing their ‘lines’ of instructions for the MLAs to follow on every seat that counts to them. While Opposition parties have not yet formally announced any meetings for the political ‘event’ for the Upper House, ruling Congress has convened the meeting of its Legislative Party as also the allies on April 11.

Sources said the Congress leadership is taking the polls very seriously at least to ensure ‘safe and smooth sailing’ for Jammu seat as it is apprehensive of some ‘foul play’ from certain political quarters that may impact the prospects , if not fail them completely , to win this seat hands down. While the party leadership is already in contact with all the legislators, a formal meeting has been convened two days ahead of the polls in the winter capital to get the final ‘message’ down the concerned quarters that all have ensure past is not repeated at ‘any cost’.

In the backdrop of the past experience during the course of polls for some seats in the year 2009, Congress is adopting a cautious and guarded approach , leaving no chances to win this seat with the full support of its own MLAs, legislators of alliance partner NC as also the legislators of other allies like PDF, JKDPN and CPM. Pertinent to mention here is that in the elections held last time, it was the candidate of NC (Vijay Bakaya)who finally emerged victorious and the Congress candidate despite having full requisite numbers from within the party as well, lost in what was seen as ‘mysterious’ number game, where Congress felt on the lines of having been ‘ditched or betrayed’.

According to sources the apprehensions of the coalition partners are on varied counts, the main one being the fact that PDP has put up a candidate who is considered to be a ‘heavy weight’ in terms of his very sound financial strength. Though there are no such indications as yet, but the apprehension of their legislators falling into any ‘trap’ has redoubled the efforts of the leadership in making sure their own flock stays in ‘one line and length’, by sticking to party instructions as also following ‘coalition dharma’ in full spirit. Even as BJP has also put up its candidate, the alliance partners do not feel threatened by it nor by the Panthers Party, instead it is only PDP which is a cause of worry. Though the fact also remains as of now the PDP has not approached any party for ‘support’.
