Govt made property tax ‘people friendly’: Tara Chand | Dismisses claims of opposition, separatists | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Apr 6 (KNS): Dismissing the claims of opposition and separatists regarding imposition of property tax, the Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand, Wednesday, said the government has made amendments to the J&K Municipal and Municipal Corporation Acts to make property tax ‘people friendly.’Talking to KNS, Chand said, “The aim of the amendments to existing property tax provisions in J&K Municipal Act 2000 and J&K Municipal Corporation Act 2000 is to make the taxes people friendly.” He said there was a uniformed general property tax at the rate of 15 per cent in Municipal Corporation and upto 10 per cent in Municipal Committee areas as per the 2000 Act. “However, as per the amendments carried out in the Act, the government has totally exempted taxes on Below Poverty Line (BPL) people, agriculture lands, hospitals, educational institutions, widows, deserted and disabled people and divorcees,” he said.Similarly, under the new Act in the Corporation, tax has been reduced to maximum of 10 per cent on commercial properties and maximum of 4 per cent on residential properties, which was earlier 15 per cent in general as per the old Act.“In Municipal Committees all residential houses have been exempted and a maximum of 3 per cent tax will be charged on commercial properties. In Municipal Councils, the commercial property shall be charged not more than seven per cent of tax and residential properties will have three per cent of the taxes,” the Deputy CM added.
