Centre reviews security of dams, power projects in North India | | | AGENCY New Delhi, Apr 6 :- The Centre has reviewed the security of dams and hydro-electric projects in North India and directed the concerned states to take necessary steps to step up vigil.At a high-level meeting, Secretary (Internal Security) in the Ministry of Home Affairs Utthan Kumar Bansal yesterday took stock of the security plans, deployment of personnel and emergency response mechanism with representatives of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand.The meeting also reviewed intelligence inputs received about the threats to the dams and the projects and how to deal with them as these are key infrastructure projects.The projects in Jammu and Kashmir are being guarded by the personnel of Central Industrial Security Force, while others are being secured by the respective state police forces.There are at least 23 major and medium dams and hydro- electric projects in North India which include Bhakra dam on Sutlej river near the border of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, Nathpa dam on Sutlej river in Himachal Pradesh and Ranjeet Sagar dam on Ravi river in Punjab. Other prominent projects are Baglihar Dam, Uri hydro- electric project - I and II and Kishanganga hydropower project in Jammu and Kashmir and Tehri dam in Uttarakhand.
