Anna's fast unto death for India and Indians | Cancer of Corruption | | Neha JAMMU, Apr 6: Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev and 72-year-old ex-army-man and renowned social worker, who is unmarried and who has not seen his home and brothers and their family members since decades, Anna Hazare, are crusaders. Both of them have been fighting against the menace of corruption and struggling for radical changes in the system aimed at surmounting this problem and ensuring all-round development of the country and its people. Both of them have been mobilizing public opinion and addressing rallies, some of them being attended by over 50 thousand people at a time. They made it a routine affair. Both of them have been crisscrossing the country to achieve their noble goal and show the corrupt politicians and bureaucrats their rightful place. Their activities have frightened and unnerved the corrupt in and outside the government and raised the hope among the people across the country that their struggle would one day end their night of discontent and despair and usher in an era full of hope and joy for the future. Convinced that the corrupt rot in the government will not facilitate their noble task, Anna Hazare has taken the final plunge by staking his very precious life. He has started fast-unto-death at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. He started his fast yesterday, with thousands of the concerned citizens making common cause with him and pledging their unstinted support for the great social and national cause. His action, which can prove very costly for the nation, his stirred the whole of the nation, with people across the country organizing dharnas and making it loud and clear that the time has come for stemming the rot, isolating and punishing the corrupt and making the government see the writing on the wall and reform itself so that the people of the country and not the so-called their representatives become the masters of the country. Why did the fragile and elderly Anna Hazare take the dangerous plunge that could lead to the death of this noble person and what did he say when he sat on fast-unto-death? He said: "I have been making passionate pleas to the powers-that-be in New Delhi to pass Jan Lokpal Bill so that definite and timely action is taken against the corrupt rot in and outside the government, but without evoking any response whatever. I met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on March 7 and requested him to set up a joint committee consisting of 50 per cent representatives from the government and 50 per cent from civil society, but with no result. The Prime Minister simply told me that he holds him in high esteem, that he would want him to give his suggestions and that his government would take a final decision on the issue. I wrote several letters to the Prime Minister and the UPA chairperson urging them to take appropriate action in the matter, but none of them ever cared to reply or take any concrete action in the matter. Our saviours have turned looters, swindlers and plunderers. It was not for this that fought for the freedom of the country; it was not for this that Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru gave up their precious lives; we have forgotten Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Skhdev; we didn't fight for the country's political redemption to see our political class turning into a class of 'Gadaars' (traitors); we didn't fight for freedom to produce A Raja (2-G spectrum scam), Suresh Kalmadi (Common Wealth Games) and so on; I will live and die for India and for my people; I will give up my life if our demand for the joint committee is not accepted…" He ended his on-the-eve of Fast-unto-death address with these words: "Dil Diya Hai, Jaan Bhi Deinge, Hai Batan Tere Liye." What he said moved everyone, including the media, which has decided to up this issue in a big way in order to supplement the efforts of Anna Hazare. (To be concluded) |
