NCPCR Chairperson calls on Chief Secretary | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, April 7, 2011: The Chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), Prof. Shantha Sinha, called on the Chief Secretary, Mr. Madhav Lal here today. During the interaction, the Chief Secretary briefed Prof. Sinha about the steps taken by the J&K Government for the protection of child rights in the State. He said under J&K Juvenile Justice System Act-1997 Juvenile Justice Boards and Child Welfare Committees have been set up at District levels which are working under the chairmanship of respective District Magistrates and District Social Welfare Officers respectively. The Chief Secretary informed the NCPCR Chairperson that the State is examining constitution of a Child Rights Commission in line with the Central Act in this regard. The meeting was told that the Social Welfare Department is running 36 orphanages comprising 24 Bal Ashrams and 12 Nari Niketans with a total capacity of 1505 inmates where they are being provided boarding, lodging, clothing, food and education. Prof. Sinha appreciated the steps taken and initiative being planned by the State Government for protecting Child Rights in the State. Principal Secretary, Housing & Urban Development/Health, Mr. Suresh Kumar, Commissioner-Secretary, Higher Education, Ms. Tanveer Jehan and other senior officers were also present in the meeting.
