Hazare’s Jammu link…served here as driver in army | | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, April 7:
Kisan Bapat Baburao Hazare popularly known as Anna Hazare, whose fast unto death against corruption in public life is receiving large scale support across nation, has a connection with Jammu as while serving Indian Army, he was posted here during mid seventies. Many would not know that Hazare was posted as a driver in the army here in Jammu in the year 1975 and he opted for Voluntary Retirement Scheme after serving the armed forces. After retirement from army, Hazare took up social service in his village Ralegaon Siddi in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra and even donated his land for a children hostel. Initially, he led a movement to eradicate alcoholism from the village. Next, he motivated the residents of the village into shramdan (voluntary labour) to build canals, small-scale check-dams and percolation tanks in the nearby hills for watershed development; efforts that solved the problem of scarcity of water in the village that also made irrigation possible. He helped farmers of more than 70 villages in drought-prone region in the state of Maharashtra since 1975. Hazare also motivated the residents of the village to build a secondary school in the village through voluntary labour.
