Early Times Report
Jammu, April 7: The population of border state of J&K has grown to 1.25 crore from 1.1 crore recorded in 2001, with Kashmir region registering a population of around 72 lakhs and the figure of Jammu region at nearly 54 lakh. Kashmir province has again registered an increase in the population against Jammu province, this time the rise being nearly 17 lakh in comparison to the 10 lakh registered during 2001 census data.

The provisional census figures released in Srinagar today also suggest that Jammu and Kashmir stands 19th state of the country as far as population is concerned with an over all population of 1,25,48,926.

The J&K state had crossed one crore figure during 2001 census when despite the call for boycott , it stood at 10,069,917 indicating a growth rate of 29.04 per cent.Interestingly, even though the 2001 report indicated growth rate has come down from 29.69 per cent in 1981 to 29.04 per cent, the addition of two lakh souls per year had given 10th position to Jammu and Kashmir among the 35 states and union territories as far as the population is concerned.
The highest growth rate in 2001 was registered in the border district of Kupwara which and the lowest growth rate was then recorded in Kathua district of the Jammu region. Now, according to 2011 census report even as Jammu district stands on top in the ranking of districts by population size with 12.16% population of the state, it is the Kashmir region again where increase has been registered again in most of the districts as per the figures. Jammu district is followed by Srinagar (10.12%), Anantnag (8.53%) Baramulla (8.09%), Kupwara (6.9%), Budgam (5.86%) Kathua (4.9%), Rajouri (4.93%), Pulwamma (4.54%) Udhampur (4.43%).

However, Jammu tops in literacy rate followed by district Samba and Leh.
.
According to Chief Principal Census Officer J&K Farooq Ahmad faktoo, J&K state has shown a remarkable achievement in literacy rate. He said that in 2001 census there were 4807286 literate while 2011 it has gone to 7245053. He further said out of a total population 12548926 recorded this time, the population of the women folk is 5883365 while the male figure is 6665561. However, he expressed dismay on the decrease in sex ratio and described it a matter of concern. He said against 55.52 percent of literacy rate recorded in 2001,literacy percent of 2011 census has been registered 68.74 percent in the state which is commendable

One more interesting fact about the Census report released today reveals that the gap of difference in the population registered in the two regions has shown sharp increase of over 7 lakhs during the last one decade, something which the Jammu based political parties have been strongly contesting, claiming the figures were not for real. Significantly, in contrats to the boycott call during last census exercise, separatist and the militant groups this time had been quite supportive and favouring smooth conduct of the census across entire Kashmir valley.
Experts have been commenting and holding this view that poor family planning has resulted in the increase in the population growth in the state. They suggest a fresh delimitation of the Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies with the Jammu region getting a bigger share as its population and area is bigger than the Kashmir valley.
The total population of the state has increased to 1.25 crore with 66.65 lakh males and 58.83 lakh females," said Farooq Ahmad Faktoo.

"This is against the previous population figure of 1.1 crore recorded during 2001 census operations," he added.

Faktoo said the decadal variation in population as per the provisional census is 23.90 percent.

"The population density per square kilometre is 124 while the sex ratio is 892. The density was 100 per square kilometre in 2001 and the sex ratio was 886," he said.

"The literacy rate among the males is 78 percent while it is 58 percent among the females," the officer said.

Significantly, the population of the Kashmir Valley has gone up to 71, 98,115 lakh while that of the Jammu region is around 54 lakh. The population in the Ladakh region is 2.80 lakh.

Interestingly also, there has been a drastic fall in child sex ratio as per the provisional census data.

"The child sex ratio (0 to 6 years of age) has fallen from 941 in 2001 to 859 in 2011 in the valley while the state's overall sex ratio has been pegged at 883 females per 1,000 males, indicating a fall of nine points compared to 2001 census," the principal census officer said.

"The census was done in two phases, first phase related to house listing, and the second phase to population enumeration. In the snowbound areas of Leh and Kargil, both the house listing and population enumeration operations were taken up simultaneously," Faktoo said.

"At least 27,500 enumerators and supervisors were trained for the census operation. We covered 21 lakh households, including institutional households like hostels and jails," the official said
