‘Measures afoot to restore pristine glory of town’
Akhnoor’s rich history to be showcased: Sham

JAMMU, APR 08: Minister for Health, Horticulture & Floriculture Mr. Sham Lal Sharma today said that measures have been stepped up to showcase the rich historical heritage of Akhnoor town, adding that experts are on job to explore hidden facets of the pristine glory of the town.
Addressing a large gathering of people at Akhnoor, the Minister said the Archaeological Survey of India has recently discovered oldest monuments of Budhism at village Ambaran which has drawn the attention of top intellectuals and historians of contemporary times.
Many experts have engaged themselves in the research work on the ancient history of Akhnoor town, who believe that the town could have been one of the centers of Budhism and Mahatma Budha might have himself worshiped at the site. He said the discovery of some relics have suggested that once this area could have been hub of activities with great religious significance.
The Minister revealed that he along with Member Parliament Jammu- Poonch Mr. Madan Lal Sharma approached some renowned historians of the country convincing them to undertake research work in Akhnoor and unravel all facts for showcasing to the general public.
In this connection, he said a noted historian and veteran photographer Vijay Keerti organized a photo exhibition depicting the history of Akhnoor in the Ashoka Hotel in New Delhi recently, which was among others witnessed by Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness Dalai Lama, who he said has appreciated the hard work of the concerned lens men and those associated with the research work. It was in this background, Dalai Lama expressed desire to visit the site shortly, he said.
Mr. Sham said the Government has already initiated various steps to restore the pristine glory of Akhnoor, which has historical significance as Maharaja Gulab Singh’s coronation ceremony was performed at the right bank of River Chenab. He said the town has already been brought on the tourist map and efforts are afoot to create necessary infrastructure to woo tourist to the town. He hoped that the town would emerge as a potential pilgrim and historic tourism destination capable of attracting tourists worldwide.
