Associates of Baba Amte meet Governor | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, APRIL 9 – The Governor, Mr. N. N. Vohra, has emphasized the need for planned initiatives being taken to promote Gandhian values and philosophy to create greater awareness among the younger generation about the Mahatma’s teachings of peace, harmony, tolerance, brotherhood, secularism and non-violence to establish a more harmonious and tolerant society. He called for involving students and youth at large in the promotion of Gandhian values for securing the much required impact. The Governor was interacting with a 27-member delegation of the noted Gandhian workers and close associates of Baba Amte who met him at Raj Bhavan here today. Among others, the delegation comprised 10 Gandhian workers from various States of the country who are currently in Jammu in connection with the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Bharat Jodo Abhiyan which had been launched by Baba Amte from Kanyakumari and had culminated at Jammu on April 9, 1986, with a view to propagate the message of peace and harmony and protection of environment. The Silver Jubilee is being organized under the aegis of Gandhi Global Family, J&K State Branch. Referring to the situation obtaining in the State for the past over 20 years, the Governor said that there is crucial need for strengthening greater unity among the people of all the regions of the State for ensuring a safe and happy future for the coming generations. He observed that the message of Gandhiji is more relevant today than ever before for establishing lasting peace and tranquility in the State. The Governor felicitated 10 associates of Baba Amte on the occasion who had participated in the Bharat Jodo Abhiyan 25 years ago. He also honoured Mr. Balraj Puri, noted journalist, and Mr. Mohammad Shafi Pandit, former civil servant, on the occasion.
