Traffic signals to be installed to regulate traffic: Akhoon | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, April 09- To regulate traffic system in twin capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar in a systematic manner, the Government would install traffic signals at various roundabouts very soon. This was stated by the Minister for Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution (CA&PD), Mr Qamar Ali Akhoon while chairing the State Level Consumer Protection Council meeting here today. Minister for State for Transport & CA&PD, Mr Shabir Ahmad Khan, who is Vice Chairman of the Council, was also present. Mr Akhoon said that the measures for installation of traffic signals constitutes priority, adding that chowks and roundabouts for installation of signals have been identified. He said new transport policy is also on anvil. For protection of the rights of consumers, the Minister said that 8 new consumer foras are being established in eight districts, adding that the posts created for these have been referred to recruitment agencies for adjustment. In the meanwhile, Law Department has been approached for making functional of these foras, he added. Mr Akhoon said that 6081 complaints were received in the State Consumer Disputes Commission, of which 5394 have been disposed off. The Minister said that the Legal Metrology department has realized revenue of Rs 1.13 crore during the last financial year in the shape of fee and fine while CA&PD department recovered fine of Rs 8.76 lakh from the defaulters. He said that the department has organized various awareness camps in rural areas to educate the people about their rights. Mr Akhoon appreciated the members for airing their views on safeguarding rights of consumers and ensured that efforts would be redoubled to protect rights of consumers and nobody would be allowed to cheat the consumers. In this connection, he sought the cooperation of the members. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Shabir Ahmad Khan said that the Government has initiated various steps to streamline the system. He thanked the members for their valuable suggestions and said that these would be considered for early action. R. Danish, Member Consumer Association, Mr Vikram Gaur, President Federation of Retailer Association, Mr Yash Paul Gupta, President Commerce of Chamber Kashmir and Jammu, Mr N. A. Dar and Y. V. Sharma, senior officers of (CA&PD and Legal Metrology Departments.
