Cops inhaling poisonous gases, putting life to risk | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, April 9: The cops on duty at busy city crossings are inhaling the poisonous gases as the traffic police has failed to provide pollution control masks to its employees deployed for managing the traffic. Three months ago Inspector General of Traffic police Hemant Lohia had made a specific announcement that soon the traffic police personnel would be equipped with the pollution control masks to prevent them from falling sick. The top cop had also given details about the number of masks procured by the department for distribution on ground zero. The said announcement was made towards the end of the month of December in 2010. Ironically, more than three months have passed but there are still no signs of pollution control masks reaching the hands of the vulnerable cops. Along with men large number of women cops too are facing the risk of suffering from respiratory disorders in the absence of protective masks. Despite procuring these masks the department has failed to distribute and seemingly playing with the health of their own personnel. It has been documented by the state pollution control department and several other NGO's working in the field of pollution control that almost all the rotaries and busy crossings in Jammu are most polluted and witness heavy traffic during peak hours yet the traffic police personnel are being deprived of the basic equipment. At major city crossings the traffic police cops can be seen protecting themselves with handkerchiefs or surgical mask or plain piece of cloth to protect themselves.
