Armed zone overall champions in sports | Deputy CM Tara Chand declares the meet closed | | ERLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, April 09: Obtaining highest points in different sports disciplines held during the five-day J&K Police Sports Meet, Armed zone retained both men and women’s overall championship trophies amidst thunderous applause from the jam-packed crowd on the valedictory function at Gulshan Ground, here this evening. While men’s team secured record 192 points, winning five out of six team events of basketball, football, handball, hockey, tug of war and kabaddi, women athletes of the Armed zone had 166 points in their kitty. Armed zone women won all the six team events of basketball, handball, kho-kho, kabaddi, tug of war and volleyball. They also dominated other individual competitions of athletics, archery, boxing, shooting, wrestling and weightlifting. In the points tally, overall men’s runners-up trophy went to Training zone with 94 points while Jammu zone remained second runners-up securing 48 points. Intelsect zone had 31 points in their tally Similarly, in women’s section, overall runners-up trophies bagged by Training zone with 52 points while Jammu zone got third place obtaining 43 points. Among other three participating zones, Auxiliary zone women failed to open their account while men had to contain with just three points earned in boxing and athletics. Meanwhile, in Gazetted Officers events, men’s table tennis title went to Sheikh Mehmood, who beat Sanjay Sharma in the final. The lawn tennis trophy bagged by Sanjay Kotwal beating Sajad Khaliq. Pawan Parihar won badminton final defeating Sanjay K Parihar. Introduced for the first time, the billiards title went to Danish Rana, who beat JP Singh in the final. In women GOs events, Anita Sharma defeated Rajni Sharma in table tennis final while Rano Kundal won the badminton trophy outplaying Rajni Sharma. In the valedictory function of the mega event, Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand was chief guest, who gave away winners and runners-up trophies as also overall championship titles. He lauded the efforts of the Director General of Police (DGP), Kuldeep Khoda for providing the men and women of the force a platform to excel as also a medium of recreation to the otherwise busy belt force. “The J&K Police has earned a name for itself, especially during the period of turmoil in the state. Not only in maintaining law and order, the force has succeeded in fighting the militancy and proxy war during all these years,” said the Deputy Chief Minister before he declared the meet closed. Earlier, DGP, in his welcome address, presented a brief note of the sports meet and other activities organised by the police for general public as part of the confidence building measures. Prominent among others present were Minister for Higher Education, Abdul Gani Malik, ADGP Armed, K Rajendra and former Deputy Chief Minister, Mangat Ram Sharma.
