EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, April 9: Women are showing the way for implementing the family planning policy introduced by the state, to curb the rising population in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the official data, in past ten years, around 1, 71,721 women have come forward for sterilization in compression to the 6,194 men. Now the officials have started to encourage the men to make their campaign a success by urging government to give incentives to them.
Official said, "Well women participation is encouraging, but our focus now is on men, they are not coming forward".
He said that good think about the sterilization programme is that about 75 per cent of the women belong to lower strata of the society who despite social pressure are visiting the health centers to make their lives better.
"Sometimes we have to hide their identity as even their husbands discourage them to take this step", he said.
According to the 2001 census, Jammu and Kashmir had population of 1 crore and by 2011 it is expected to rise to 1.30 crore, an increase of 30 per cent in a decade, which has become a matter of concern for the administration.
Records say that in 2000-01, while 201 men came forward sterilization, 14,640 women visited the health centers. Similarly in 2008-09, the number of men rose to 1797, but number of women also increased to 19,616 women.
"When it comes to adopting sterilization as a family planning move, the onus rests on women, they have outscore men by many times in population control in the state", said a senior official from the department of health.
It is pertinent to mention here that every male who comes forward for sterilization get Rs 1,100 for the operation while women get Rs 600. In case of government employees, if they opt for the operation they can additional increment on their salaries. Male sterilization had become simple over the years but still there had not been much change. Though latest technology provides procedure in which the male can go home within minutes of the operation, there are not many takers among the males keeping in view the old view that it led to decrease in strength. Doctors said laparoscopic sterilization was the easiest procedure these days with 80 to 90 per cent of women adopting this birth control method.
Officials said that now the Health Department in all the three regions of the state have decided to start campaign in government departments to encourage the employees to come forward for sterilisation.
