Showkat’s assassination likely to destabilise peace | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu,April 9:- Moulana Showkat’s assassination is going to have a serious bearing on the peace process. This is what the senior police functionaries believe. A senior police officer ruled out Moulana’s futwa (ruling) against violence last year and his closeness to the moderate faction of the separatists. According to him, Kashmir did not witness any major incident of violence for the past few months and this could be the reason for the assassination. “By killing a religious leader, the killers think the peace efforts can be destabilized”, he said. The official claimed that police prevented the situation from taking an ugly turn when a group of mourners raised provocative slogans. Police had been told to remain passive. The official said a LeT activist wanted to put the blame of the killing on a Hindu outfit. “Luckily the conversation was intercepted and remedial measures were taken accordingly”, he said. However, political circles believe that the killing has been effected to convey a message that `militants can still strike at will’ notwithstanding the claims to the contrary. Pertinent to mention, the militants have always made their presence felt when authorities say that militancy has been wiped out.
