‘Commoner alone can decide quantum of normality’ | Irresponsible statements | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 9: While different quarters have given different reasons for Moulana Showkat's killing on Friday in a blast, Kashmir watchers have linked it to what they call irresponsible and reckless statements issued by the authorities from time to time. "You cannot trumpet a change without actually making the people feel it on the ground", said an agitated political activist preferring anonymity. According to him there is no need claiming that situation has taken a favourable turn or militancy has been wiped out. "Let the people feel it on ground", he said. History of the conflict adds weight to the activist's view. It has been seen that the militants have always struck in a big way whenever the authorities claimed return of normalcy or a change in situation. There is no denying the fact that the authorities have the data to measure the quantum of violence effectively but it is the commoner on the street who puts the official claims to litmus test. If he feels safe, the situation has definitely improved. And if he is scared, the officials need to do a lot of homework. The story of homecoming of a Kashmiri pundit merits special mention here. After returning to Valley after fifteen years, the pundit went out with his Muslim friends one evening. They had sumptuous meal in a posh restaurant. "Do you feel safe now?" One of his friends questioned him. "I will feel safe the day when I can walk to my Habba Kadal residence in the evening after having a peg of whisky in a Lal Chowk bar", he shot back. This is how people measure the quantum of normality and this is what the officials must bear in mind while making tall claims about the improvement in situation. Cynicism and skepticism apart, the authorities know that Kashmir is a volcano and it can erupt any time on the slightest provocation. In such a scenario, issuing reckless statements makes no sense. All the people in Jammu Kashmir want restoration of peace but not in a way the authorities want it. Remember, peace cannot be imposed. It has to be restored gradually and carefully. |
