Assassination of Ahl Hadees chief aimed at destabilsing peace | | | Early Times Report Jammu, April 9: Whatever may have been the reasons for the assassination of Maulana Showkat Ahmed,President Jamiat Ahl Hadees in Srinagar on Friday, one thing is clear that it was part of the plan to belittle the claim of Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, and senior functionaries of the security agencies that the situation in Kashmir had shown marked improvement. It has been seen in the past that whenver the Government claims that the security environment in Kashmir had improved or when it claims that tourist traffic to the valley has picked up it is greeted with gun and grenade attacks. What happened on Friday just at the entrance of the Ahl Hadees mosque at Gowkadal seems to be a replica of what had been happening in Pakistan where the terrorists continue to target the mosques simply to kick up sectar ian clashes and mistrust.Jamait Ahl Hadees is differ ent from Jamait-e-Islami.While the former is purely a religious organisaion the latter is a political organisation wearing the garb of a religious body. About decades ago the followers of Ahl Hadees were limited but during the last 15 years it has extended the area of its influence. In imbibing among people the habit of following the holy Koran in letter and spirit Ahl Hadees built 600 mosques in Jammu and Kashmir. Those who know him from close quarters say that Maulana Showkat devoted all his energies in religious activities even though he had some association with the moderates among the separatists against Jamait-e-Islami being close to the hardliners. The assassination of the Maulana sent panic waves in Kashmir. The breezy peace that had encouraged Government to claim improvement in the security environment fell broken on the ground. In fact miltants and separatists were waiting for an opportunity for destabilising peace in Kashmir which could pave the way for another spell of hot summer of the type the valley witnessed last year in wch 112 people were killed. The issuance of the Dogra certificate was being used as oof the issues for destabilsing peace but it could not incite people to violence after the Government modified the order limiting the use of thecertificate for height relaxation in the recruitment in paramilitary forces. The Maulana was hardly any controversial figure. He was treated by his followers as a saint. But those who have been keen to trigger violence and unrest have sinned more than sinning by killing hkm in a landmine blast. The mine had been fitted on a bicycle that had been kept near the mosque. A red alert was sounded to prevent supporters of the Maulana from indulging in violence. and arson. Inside reports said that the incident was triggered also for the purpose of forcing the Government to redeploy the security forces in Srinagar city so that nobody could claim that the situation had improved to the extent that there was no need for keeping the security bunkers in the city. The incident may force those in the Government to rethink while pleading in favour of withdrawal of troops and paramilitary forces. It is yet to be seen whether the Gowkadal incident is the first alvo fired by those who are trying to set the stage for another ot summer for which the police authorities hav made adequate arrangements by way of equipping security personnel with non-lethal weapons.(eom) |
