Teach less, work more for 'personal aggrandizement': motto of J&K academia too | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 9: A report indicating that professors and teachers in reputed academic institutions of the country devoting less than four hours to teaching in a week may have stirred and shaken all but the fraternity here in J&K. Not because they are insulated to or ignorant about the normal ethics teachers are required to follow. Actually, the scene here is not even similar but far more grim and grave. At a time when entire nation is celebrating great social activist turned national hero Anna Hazare's victory over his crusade against corruption, the startling revelation about this saddening picture in academic institutes of excellence is enough to stir the Union HRD ministry to act and intervene to save academics from what can be seen as 'corrupting' practice by Professors and teachers who are indulging in pursuing 'personal agendas' through activities other than teaching. The scene is brazen mostly with some departments of arts faculties, a language faculty and even with those who are entrusted with ensuring quality and continuing education….. The trend of indulging in anything and everything but teaching started with two main universities in the two capital cities of state as militancy progressed along with mushroomed growth and activism of NGOs, pushing almost every professor or teacher with good oratory and articulating capacity into the 'business'. While the agendas vary from political causes to fad for social services and even cultural, environmental.., ventures of these organisations which have conveniently 'reached out and permeated' the walls of academic institutions, over the years the teachers have offered their time and commitments more than what is asked . The reason : such activities push them into places of 'prominence' and over the years have enabled them to learn the art and pursue the practice of pushing their own agendas besides making more money. If the story is straight and open in University of Kashmir, things are no more unclear or hidden in Jammu University as well. While the engagement of senior professors in political discourses organized by bodies from outside the campus is understood as they are required to follow such literary and interactive sessions in the larger interests of students , there are many young and junior teachers who have affiliations with scores of NGOs in no less arrangement of working on part time basis. From association and affiliation with reputed organizations like Red Cross to children's organizations and even charitable trusts , media ventures, the activism and activities of such teachers in the university stretches far ahead but far from the roles and 'courses' they are actually needed to follow as teachers. The devotion is more in such activities because it has helped them earn 'rewards and mementoes of recognition' conveniently, which warrant lot of hard work, dedication and devotion in teaching. While the University teachers are devoting few hours cumulatively in a week to the work they have been employed for and are seen very often rushing through other activities never objected to by authorities at the helm. Saddening enough is the fact that some of the teachers among this lot are utilising both their position and the facilities they get within Universities for pushing ahead the work for other organizations they are affiliated with. The 'malaise' of indulging in anything but teaching has percolated down to even the colleges where teachers are seldom seen in the premises soon after they finish the relatively 'envious' job of delivering lectures not exceeding 45 minutes a day. |
