SSP Traffic denies harassment, misbehavior
11/16/2006 12:28:52 AM

JAMMU NOV-15
To lodge its protest against the misbehavior and beating of a auto driver allegedly by a traffic cop here the other day, the auto services remained off the road in Jammu city today.
The auto union alleged that one Krishan Lal auto driver was harassed; man handled and misbehaved by a traffic cop and to lodge a protest against this hooliganism, the auto union had given a hartal call today.
However, the SSP Traffic S A Watali when contacted maintained that the allegation was wrong and fabricated. He said in fact the Traffic Department has started a campaign to book all those auto drivers violating the traffic norms and avoiding use of fare metres. He said following complaints by the commuters about the over charging by the auto drivers and in pursuant to Court directions, the department has launched a sustained drive to arrest this trend. Afraid of action against the erring drivers, the union raised an issue not based on facts just to cover their misdeeds and added that the driver concerned had misbehaved with the traffic cop when asked to use the metre for charging hire
In the meanwhile, the Auto Union Association President Shanti Saroop in a hand out released this evening claimed that the hartal was complete and a rally was taken out against the SSP Traffic.
Saroop also alleged that he himself was thrashed by the SSP in full public view when he approached him for redressal of the grievance adding that it was a rare example of its own when such a top official assaulted the President of a union with physical injuries leading to his hospitalization. ‘The law does not allow any body to beat some one like this’, he observed.
The hand out claimed that the strike was complete and peaceful and the protestors holding the ‘Gandhi Giri style’ banners with slogans ‘ Traffic police get well soon’ marched through the bazaars. The Union representatives later met Divisional Commissioner, Jammu and Deputy Inspector General of Police to lodge its protest against the erring traffic officials. The hand out claimed that the senior officials assured them of action against the erring traffic cop.
