Anna is national hero: Samba pond dedicated to him reflects offical neglect | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA JAMMU, April 10: Anna Hazare, the modern day ‘Gandhi’, who with his anti-graft crusade shook the Union Government, would feel dismayed if he ever gets a chance to see the appalling condition of a site dedicated to his name in village Suchaini, about 30 kms from here. The village Suchaini, situated along Jammu-Pathankot National Highway, in Samba district has the unique distinction of having its association with Anna Hazare since a pond was upgraded and View Point near to it was constructed in honour of the veteran social activist in the year 2001. Located on a hillock in Trera hamlet, 2.5 kms from Suchaini on Suchaini-Purmandal road, the pond named after the ‘messiah’ against corruption and christened as ‘Anna Hazare Talab’ is in complete shambles due to sheer “official apathy”. “A View Point was constructed and upgradation of the already existing Chappari (Pond) had been taken up under Water Shed Project of Environment Ministry with the efforts of Major General (Retd) Goverdhan Singh Jamwal, who made it possible through an NGO JK Pryavaran Society,” informed Jagdish Singh, 48, of Suchaini “Besides, a water tank was also built but the place which was dedicated to Anna Saheb now provides the visitors only a shabby look as the water has completely dried up from the pond and the gate of the View Point has also no where to be located mainly because of the desertedness of the place,” he added Singh further informed that after the project got completed, Anna Hazare himself came to Suchaini for the inauguration of the View Point. The villagers alleged that the View Point site is too far from Suchaini and is not connected with a mettled road for the last so many years due to which it is almost impossible for the children, women and old aged persons to visit the place. “It could have been an ideal place for the locals to spend their leisure time but the lack of pucca road led to its neglection….. In absence of a proper road we could not pay attention to the maintenance of the site and over the years it turned out to be a happy hunting ground for the urchins only,” Sanjeev Singh, 43, Ex Panch, Ward No 3 Suchaini, said “The road project was started in 1972-73 but till date it has not been completed which not only is a big obstacle for the locals to pay visit to the View Point site but it also creates problems for us whenever we have to take a body to cremate it on the banks of holy Devika river… It’s really difficult for us to reach cremation ground covering a long distance on a kuccha path,” he added
