Congress Legislative Party meeting today, allies too ‘summoned’ | NC convenes meeting followed by dinner on Tuesday for coalition partners | | Early Times Report Jammu, April 10: As the countdown for six seats of Legislative Council polls begins, every political party that has some strong stakes has increased its ‘guard’ to keep their ‘own flock’ together. Congress has convened its formal CLP meeting tomorrow while as NC has organized meeting of coalition allies a day before the polls. Polling will take place for the seats on April 13. Sources said while the J&K Pradesh Congress Committee chief Prof Saif-u-Din Soz is working quite hard to keep his own flock together, he is still in contact with not only the members of his own party at individual levels but also with the independent members who hold key to Congress success .There are at least five independents who will matter in voting pattern for the Jammu seat, on which Congress has highest claims. Soz is said to be individually approaching these members in order to ensure they are by the side of Congress in voting. Sources said even though ruling National Conference is trying hard, and is rather successful in roping in independent MLA from Kashmir Engineer Rashid from Langate Assembly , Prof Soz is also said to have met Engineer Rashid independent on Friday when the former was in Kashmir.Prof Soz , for the purpose of reassuring their support for Congress, also met CPM member MY Tarigami and PDF president Hakim Yasin on Saturday. However, both the members have arrived in Jammu today and will participate in the meeting organized by Congress tomorrow. Apart from Ghulam Hassan Mir, who is also an ally and a cabinet minister, Prof Soz is also banking on the support of Charanjit Singh, independent MLA from Kathua. The PCC chief who is in Delhi will arrive in Jammu tomorrow morning as the meeting has been scheduled at 11 in the morning. Apart from Prof Soz, the meeting is being attended by Mohan Prakash, senior Congress leader and in charge J&K affairs. Though Congress corridors had this news in circulation that Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad shall also make it to the meeting at Jammu but in the wake of his busy schedule in Pondicherry, he is unlikely to attend. Sources also said one more senior leader from J&K who was recently elevated by the party high command for national level assignments Gulchain Sing CHarak may also come to Jammu tomorrow to attend the meeting which is considered be very crucial in terms of the issuing a sort of formal ‘whip to all the Congress legislators to fall in one line as far as the voting for own candidate. Though high command instructions to the party in following the directions of the Boss (Prof Soz), are believed to have worked, but sources said the leadership is still worried and apprehensive from the ‘political moves’ and ‘gestures’ from different quarters which have the ‘potential’ of some members ‘shifting’ loyalties and the possibility of few from within the party itself toeing that ‘line’ is not being ruled out by the insiders. Sources said even though Congress High command, which is cognizant about the factionalism in the state unit, has already conveyed that no members should indulge in ‘foul’ play’, some dissidents of the Soz have been openly saying they would not support Yashpal Khajuria, the candidate of party for Jammu seat. In the hectic political activity surrounding the LC polls, ruling National Conference has convened meeting which will be followed by dinner on Tuesday. Apart from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Union minister and Patron of the party Dr Farooq Abdullah will also attend the meeting, sources added. Farooq arrived in winter capital this evening for the purpose of Legislative Council polls. It is pertinent to mention that there will a specific number of votes which are required for a particular seat either from Kashmir Valley or for two Jammu votes. As per the pattern in Kashmir seats, it is a foregone conclusion that opposition PDP shall have smooth sailing in grabbing at least one. Apart from BJP which has 11 members , PDP too has put up its candidate for Jammu seat, which makes this contest comparatively keen and politically ‘hot’.
