Tree talk campaign proves popular community cum environmental programme

Jammu, Apr 11: Tree talk campaign launched in Jammu wef 19th December ,2010 and concluded on 3rd April ,2011 proved an extraordinary popular community cum environmental programme wherein participants from all walks of life and without any distinction of caste , creed and colour joined hands in the morning hours on Sundays to focus on tree relations , to enjoy refreshing melodies sung by birds , local musicians , to have glimpses of tree poetry recited by reputed poets , to gather valuable historical , mythological ,taxonomical inputs told by historians , elders , folk and botanical experts , to get local folk healing information as practiced in the villages , to foster community bonding and share common tree knowledge , to taste lesser known beverages ,recipes ,dishes , sweets , country cuisines.
Trees which remained focus of discussion during sixteen tree talks included trees like Buddha’s Coconut Tree , Clove , Indian Laburnum , Flame of The Forest , Kusum , Dinner Plate Tree , Camel Foot Tree , Tree of Sadness , Sorrowless tree , Paradise Tree , Rudraksh tree , Bursera tree , Haldu tree , False Quinine Tree , Heliotrope Tree , Bridal Couch Tree , Governor’s Plum Tree , False Ash Tree , Ivory Tree , African Sausage Tree ,Midnight Horror Tree , Broken bones Tree ,Agnimantha Tree ,Drumstick Tree , Indian Coral Tree , Arjun Tree , Mast Tree , Dyer’s Oleander Tree ,Blackboard Tree , Spanish Cherry Tree , Camphor Tree , Popcorn Tree , Childlife Tree , Indian Cork Tree , Indian Beech Tree , Monkey Jack Tree ,Monkey Face Tree ,African Tulip Tree ,Red Silk Cotton Tree , Floss Silk Tree , Wood Apple Tree , Women’s Tongue Tree etc.
Tree Talks were conducted in a cordial atmosphere , new inputs gladly disseminated across varied section of participants , trainees from Chitternar School in Kashmir brought exceptionally rich folk tree traditions , folk music , folk anecdotes and mesmerized Jammuites who were exposed to a rich natural and cultural heritage of Kashmir .
Two Forest Training Schools of Jammu also organized Tree talks in their premises to acquaint trainees about tree flora of Jammu.
Special Tree Talks were organized at Botanical Garden in Jammu University, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Kakdiyal , Nomain Pine Forest , GDC Udhampur , Women College Parade Jammu , Eco Task Force Station Tooten Di Khui , Media support , both electronic as well as print was exceptionally mindboggling , both got intimately associated with Tree Talk Campaign and disseminated useful tree related information far and wide .
Tree Talk participants deserve all kind of appreciation from the Government as well as prominent organizers coming from Colleges , Universities , Forest Department , Forest Training Schools and members of civil society .
