Drunk driving causes 70pc of 2,00,000 deaths on roads a year | | | AGENCY New Delhi, Apr 11 : An organisation working against drunk driving today sought a separate legal provision to suitably deal with this crime in a stringent manner as about 70 per cent of 2,00,000 deaths in road accidents every year in India are due to drunk driving. Community Against Drunken Driving movement activists met Union Home Secretary G K Pillai and presented him with recommendations to curb the menace. Making drunk driving non-bailable in case of offender causing grievous injury or death and setting up national uniform enforcement guidelines to ensure proper policing, prosecution and training across India were among a number of recommendations made to the Home Secretary, a statement issued by the organisation said. CADD also want formation of a special monitoring committee under the Ministry of Home Affairs which would not only review the existing scenario of enforcement and policing pertaining to drunk driving but also make suitable recommendations to other concerned departments and ministries. Mr Pillai told the organisation that the issue of drunk driving has been neglected for long and the Government was willing to take necessary steps to address this problem, the statement said.
