J&K Government kneeling under the separatists' pressure? | Dogra Certificate | | Neha JAMMU, Apr 11: The NC-Congress coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir has refused to learn from what the nation witnessed two days ago in the wake of the fast-unto-death by social activist Anna Hazare. The Government of India had conceded the Anna's demands after being convinced that not to do so would be only to provoke the angry and determined nation to come on to the roads and create Egypt-like situation in the country. The Union Government exhibited maturity and averted the impending disaster by meeting the Anna's demands and announcing that the anti-corruption Jan Lokpal Bill will be introduced in the forthcoming monsoon session of the Parliament and that the same would be passed. But here is a government in the state that appears out to provoke the Dogras of Jammu province to do what the nation did across he country, including Jammu, between April 5 and April 8. It is hardly necessary to refer to what the nation did to strengthen the hands of Anna, the crusader, during those four eventful days, as everyone is fully aware of that. If what has appeared in a section of the print media, local and national, is any indication, then it can be said without any hesitation that the state government has knelt and identified itself completely with Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and similar other Kashmiri leaders who have opposed the government decision to issue Dogra certificates to the Dogras of the Jammu province, including Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs, who wish to join the Indian Army and paramilitary forces. They have threatened an agitation in Kashmir. In fact, they declared April 11 as the day of protests against the decision of the state government - decision interpreted by them as a conspiracy hatched to facilitate the formation of Duggardesh, enable the Jammu Dogras to establish their domination over the Kashmiri Muslims and change the Muslim-majority character of the state. It would be no exaggeration to say that the Kashmiri separatists have contempt for the Jammu Dogras. It needs to be note that Revenue Minister and Congress leader Raman Bhalla had taken this decision following the January 11, 2011 decision of the Union Government to give certain relaxations to the Dogras, Ladakhis and Marathas in terms of height and chest width. Notwithstanding the reports that Raman Bhalla has stuck to the decision he took, the anti-Jammu and anti-Dogra forces in the Government have, it seems, joined hands in order to dilute the very spirit of the government order with a view to pandering to the likes of Geelani and Mirwaiz. Reports in a section of the print media suggest that the state government has made its mind to approach the union government and ask it to bring the entire population of the state under the ambit of its January 11, 2011 order. In other words, the state government has planned to jeopardize the interests of the Dogras and wilfully. It appears that the state government, like the Kashmiri separatists and extremists, considers the Dogras of Jammu province as irrelevant. It doesn't augur well for the future of the state. The fact of the matter is that the essentially Kashmiri-centric government is pushing the Dogrs of Jammu province to the wall. There are potent reasons to believe that such an attitude on the part of the state government would not only end the patience of the Dogras but would also surely motivate them to seek separation from Kashmir. Why should the Dogras remain part of the system that despises them and ignores them and that is guided solely by the Kashmiri interests, whatever their nature and implications? It is indeed surprising that the Congress has not been able to play its role, notwithstanding the fact that the NC cannot remain power even for a day without the Congress' support. One cannot expect any fair play from the Congress, but one surely fails to understand what is preventing the Congress party from reining in the NC. |
