And some have interlocution thrust upon them | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 11: Even as New Delhi's nominated interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir are giving final shape to their report, a team of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) arrived in Jammu today. The five member `study group' intends to interact with a cross section of the people in Jammu and the Valley. The group headed by Rajnath Singh made clear that it will not hesitate to talk to the separatists within the framework of the Indian constitution. "We will not go to the separatists. They will have to come to us", he said. Raj Nath Singh happens to be a senior leader of BJP and commands fair amount of respect in the party. His statement evoked sarcastic remarks in Srinagar. "His statements reflects his arrogance", said an activist of moderate Hurriyat Conference. "If he believes people in Kashmir are dying to meet him, he is mistaken", he added. Pertinent to mention, the separatists rejected the invitation of the nominated Interlocutors. The chairman of moderate Hurriyat, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq even refused to talk to New Delhi unless his four points were accepted. He has sought demilitarization of civilian areas, repeal of AFSPA, release of political prisoners and justice for the victims of last year's agitation. And hardliner Geelani wants New Delhi to declare Jammu Kashmir a disputed territory before he comes to the negotiating table. Another activist of the moderate conglomerate appreciated the confidence of Singh. "He wants the separatists to talk to him within the framework of Indian constitution and is not even ready to talk to them ", he said. Singh has visited the state at a time when the moderates have received a severe setback. Moulana Showkat, the president of Jamiat-e-Ahli Hadees, considered a moderate was killed in blast last week. The chances of anybody from the separatist camp meeting him, Kashmir watchers believe, seem quite bleak especially at this point of time. The study group, therefore, will have to go back without getting the separatist version of the Kashmir story. The group, however, can expect a positive response if it follows former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee's Kashmir policy. Vajpayee, it may be mentioned, is held in high esteem by most of the separatists. He was the only person who tried to initiate the peace process within the ambit of Insaniyat (Humanity) and not the constitution of India. |
