LC polls: Congress united, claims Soz, Tara Chand | Three key members remain absent, Hakim, Mir attend CLP meeting | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 11: Even as the three important members remained absent from the crucial Legislative Party meeting today, Congress president Prof Saif-u-Din Soz exuded confidence that party shall win two Legislative Council seats in Jammu region. Both the factions, apparently in a bid to send the message of unanimity and unity across, put up a united face with almost all key leaders who matter from the Ghulam Nabi Azad camp attending the meeting. Despite all these efforts for forging unity for crucial political purpose, the sword of uncertainty in terms of the probabilities of cross voting both within the party as well as from other quarters looms large , notwithstanding the fact that leadership , particularly PCC Chief Prof Soz making last ditch effort to keep the flock together in the meeting today. The leaders and MLAs of both the divided factions attended the meeting which substantiated the claims of the leadership while expressing satisfaction that it was a 'united' house in order. Congress Legislative Party (CLP) to met in Jammu today this morning in which the instructions and directions albeit short of a formal whip was issued in terms of explaining the voting pattern for the Jammu seats to the MLAs . The key word and thrust being that they have to stay united for the Legislative Council polls on April 13. Former Minister considered to be loyalist of Azad camp GM Saroori chose to stay away from the meeting. Two more members Tourism Minister Rigzin Jora and former minister Abdul Majid Wani absent in today's meeting. However, PCC chief later gave in detail the individual reasons as to why the members could not make it to meeting today, contending they had some prior engagements, unavoidable in nature. Their absence, he asserted , should not be construed in negative manner as they would remain by the side of the Congress on the voting day. Though it was earlier given to believe that AICC general secretary and in charge J&K affairs would attend the CLP meeting today but he was conspicuous by his absence . The meeting was chaired by Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Saif-Ud-Din Soz and AICC secretary Abdul Maumeen Ansari attended the meet, apparently in place of Prakash. While Congress barring the three members was in full quorum, the key independent members Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir and Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) Hakim Mohammad Yasin attended the meeting but CPM member MY Tarigami too skipped the meeting, though Soz is believed to have met him twice earlier to seek his support in favour of Congress. Interestingly, what sprung a surprise to many was that Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand also attended the meeting today who later jointly addressed the media with Prof Soz. Sources however, said that despite the show of unity, apprehensions of the cross voting happening on the voting day , looms large over the party. Later addressing a joint press conference JKPCC president and Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand said that coalition will win all the five seats including on those Congress has fielded its candidates. "There is every likelihood that one seat in valley will go to PDP, but on other our chances are 100 per cent. Congress is united and together with allies". He said that all the Legislators have shown their total support to the Yashpal Khajuria and Jahangir Mir for the election to the legislative council. On the seat sharing arrangement and as to why party surrendered its claim in Kashmir, Soz said, "This answered our political requirements better and keeping in view the numerical strength of the NC the decision was taken to have 3:2 share in LC polls". Contending there was no fear of crossing, Soz said, "Leave the past, the party is together today and all the legislators have extended their support during the meeting……. those who did not attend the meet conveyed to us their decision on account of their prior engagements" Soz said. The meeting apart from Deputy Chief Minister Shri Tara Chand, was attended by Ministers-Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, Taj Mohiuddin, Sham Lal Sharma, Raman Bhalla, Manohar Lal, Aijaz Ahmed Khan, Shabir Ahmed Khan; MLAs- Mohammad Sharief Niaz, G. A. Mir, Viqar Rasool, Krishan Chand Bhagat, Ashok Dogra and Indu Pawar. The PCC president, at the very outset, told the meeting that Mr. Abdul Majid Wani-MLa was in Delhi attending on his mother who was receiving treatment there and Minister for Tourism Rigzin Zora had to go to Leh to attend a pre-scheduled meeting there. As for Saroori, he could not attend the meeting as he was touring interior areas of Kishtwar district and now he was on way to Jammu. All the legislators attending the meeting assured Prof. Soz of their unqualified support to the party candidates, Yashpal Khajuria and Jahangir Mir for election to the legislative council. The legislators also assured full support to other candidates of the coalition. |
